About our program

Opportunity Middle College, which is housed on the Newtown campus of Bluegrass Community & Technical College, provides a small, family-like atmosphere that nurtures student success in college classrooms. Our high school staff includes a program director, a counselor, and five classroom teachers. All OMC students take at least two college courses each semester so they are also exposed to highly qualified college instructors.

We cap enrollment at 130 juniors and seniors, accepting students from all A1 high schools and all programs in FCPS. OMC enables students to earn college hours free or at a reduced cost in their pursuit of an associate degree, a four-year degree, or a technical program certificate/diploma while completing the credit requirements to earn a diploma from Fayette County Public Schools.

In all instances, OMC students receive dual credit for each college course. Some college courses such as ENG 101 count as a required dual credit course.  Students will receive three college credit hours on the college transcript and one high school credit on the high school transcript for the same course! Other college courses such as COM 252 count as an elective, with the student receiving three college hours on the college transcript and one high school credit.

Students are allowed to participate in extra-curricular activities at their assigned high school including sports, clubs, student organizations, prom, etc. They must complete the state credit requirement for graduation (22 credits) instead of the assigned FCPS high school graduation requirement, which ranges from 22 to 26 credits. (The difference is four elective credits for schools requiring 26 total.)

OMC students graduate with their peers at their assigned high school commencement, and their diploma is issued by the high school.
